We are looking for a highly motivated technical assistant (m/f/d) specializing in genomic methods to join our research group on Hybridization and Speciation at the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart ( https://www.naturkundemuseum-bw.de/en/research/zoology/department-zoology/ricardo-pereira). The lab-tech will support projects focused on species formation and persistence in changing environments using next-generation sequencing technology and museum collections. The position is available from October 1, 2024, and is funded until September 2026, and the application deadline is June 30. Research Group Overview: Our group investigates how species form and persist in changing environments. We use a variety of natural hybridization systems (e.g., amphibians, reptiles, fishes, cephalopods, insects) and population genomics to understand: - How current biodiversity patterns resulted from past climate cycles, - How such diversity persists today, - How current genetic diversity within species might respond to future environmental changes. Position Details: The successful candidate will work at the interface between laboratory logistics/technology and research, contributing to genomic studies with a focus on next-generation sequencing technology. This role is integral to our research on speciation and hybridization. Main Tasks: - Budgeting and purchasing lab equipment for genomic methods - Ensuring the reliable technical supply of the genomic laboratory - Managing general consumables and tissue samples - Implementing and coordinating laboratory work for current research projects (e.g., dissection, DNA and RNA extraction, purification, library preparation for next-generation sequencing) - Processing raw sequencing data and ancillary data (e.g., georeferencing, morphometrics) - Animal care in an insectary - Implementing and monitoring safety-related regulations and hygiene standards Requirements: - Completed vocational training as a technical assistant (BTA, MTA, LTA), biology laboratory assistant, or a comparable university education in biology (Bachelor) with practical and theoretical expertise - Relevant professional experience and a broad knowledge of methods in classical molecular biology and next-generation sequencing - Ability to work independently - Tech affinity and confidence in handling common IT systems and databases - High level of communication skills in English and German, and ability to work in an international team - Organizational skills We Offer: - Remuneration up to E9b TV-L full-time (job-sharing possible); the position is limited until September 2026 - Collaboration in an internationally renowned research museum - Co-authorship in collaborative manuscripts - An attractive workplace in the center of Stuttgart - Flextime and family-friendly working hours - Participation in company health management - A subsidized ticket for local public transport (JobTicket BW) Applications in German and English are equally welcome. The SMNS aims to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore strongly encourages applications from qualified women. Individuals with disabilities will be given priority for employment if equally qualified. Please submit your electronic application - in a single PDF file, max. 5 MB - with a cover letter, curriculum vitae, methodological skills, and relevant certificates no later than June 30, 2024, to molekularlabor-ta@smns-bw.de. Interviews are scheduled between July 9th-12th, 2024. For more information, please contact Dr. Ricardo Pereira ( ricardo.pereira@smns-bw.de).
