Using a fossil-rich phylogeny of the
insect superfamily Mantispoidea and geometric morphometrics, Liu and
collaborators demonstrate that the appearance of a key morphological
novelty—the raptorial appendage—acted as a constraint on the clade’s
future evolution, leading to ecological specialization and accelerated
diversification in some lineages, while limiting further morphological
evolution and reducing environmental resilience in others.
